Jessica Hobson

I’m the New Business Initiatives Director at CCH Australia, responsible for driving change in the publishing business and finding ways that we can innovate and improve what we do. It’s a newly created role and I think it shows that CCH are serious about improving, evolving and investing in innovation.

I have worked at CCH for 7 years in a variety of editorial and product development roles. Previously I worked at Time magazine both in Sydney and Hong Kong. I am unusual at CCH as I am one of the few people in the CCH team who is not a lawyer; my background and passion is publishing.

One of the key parts of my role is to understand our customers – who are they, what do they want, how do they want it? I am hoping that CCHatter will help answer these questions. I also want CCHatter to give people an insight into CCH: who we are, what we are thinking, doing and planning.

I am not a digital native but I have become increasingly interested in the power of social media and how it will impact publishers. If I map out what CCH might look like in 2012 Web 2.0 plays an important role in content creation and dissemination: the possibilities are exciting and seemingly endless.

I’m the Senior Information Specialist at Wolters Kluwer Asia Pacific, a role that is part librarian, part Knowledge Manager and part market researcher.  I came to Wolters Kluwer 2 years ago from a background in public and academic libraries, which I feel has given me a commitment to meeting the needs of my clients and also a real passion for sharing knowledge.

In addition to managing our library and working on KM projects, I’ve also had the opportunity to explore social media and how it might be of use to libraries and publishers.  Part of this was participating in the research and development of the CCH whitepaper “Professionals and Web 2.0”.   But I also spent some time playing around with using RSS for current awareness and social bookmarking for organising resources.  After sticking my toe in the water for a while I got serious 6 months ago by starting my own blog, www.km-librarian.blogspot.com  and getting active on Twitter.

I am excited by the rise of social media and the opportunities it presents for changing the way we communicate and exchange knowledge.  Part of the story is how it is changing the delivery of professional content.  But the other part is how engaging in open dialogue with our customers via social media has the potential to change the very creation and provision of CCH content to better suit your needs.  I look forward to blogging and exchanging ideas with you on these topics.
